๐ŸคŸAmerican Sign Language

This is an ACTIVE club for 2023-2024.

What is this club about?

The ASL Club is beneficial to the education of American Sign Language and learning more about deaf culture for students. ASL Club can help teach students more signing, despite their academic background in ASL, and create a fun environment to meet new people. Regardless of whether students are enrolled in an ASL class, everyone may join. ASL is a highly interactive language, differentiating itself from other languages taught in high school, making it engaging and expressive. ASL offers students at Foothill many amazing opportunities like getting hands-on experience of signing with members of the deaf community, and getting a glimpse of experiencing ways to further signing out of school. Our ultimate goal as a club is to share this language, educate people on the deaf community, and inspire others to learn the major importance of ASL. In our meetings, we tailor our activities to the curiosity of our members by teaching signs of topics that are requested and this looks like teaching signs that can be used on the daily, or teaching signs that are helpful in the workplace. Another goal of our club, and why it is unique, is we do our best to break the stigma that colleges will not accept students who take ASL, as well as the stigma that ASL is not a language. Most colleges in the United States accept American Sign Language and they even host programs for students to further their academic sign language career, this includes Ivy Leagues. Without the American Sign Language Club at Foothill High School, there will be many missed opportunities and misinformation for incoming students who are looking to pursue this language. With the help of our members, the atmosphere of our meetings are lighthearted and engaging, and most of all fun.
